Developer Interview

vol06.Manabu Seko / Capcom Interactive Canada, Inc. / Head of Americas and EMEA Studio

Emergence of next-gen devices - Support for ever-diversifying platforms and the potential of mobile gaming

- Could you tell us about some of the your chellenges you face in Europe and North America, as well as your strategy for these regions?
"Seko"
An enormous transition is taking place in North America and Europe as people replace their cell phones with iPhones and other smartphones. For Capcom, the explosive popularity of smartphones represents the emergence of a new development platform. To capitalize on this opportunity, some of our overseas competitors have used restructuring initiatives and acquisitions to quickly alter their business portfolios. Overall, the pace of change in our industry is gaining momentum day by day. To succeed, we must channel development resources to this rapidly growing platform as quickly and efficiently as possible. Furthermore, we must revise our strategic objectives while minimizing the impact of this change on established business operations.

People who develop software are inclined to immerse themselves in the comfortable development environment that they created in the past. Once this happens, it is difficult to coax these people to leave this environment. My role as a supervisor is to stimulate and inspire these developers so they can move on to the next wave. We have already adapted swiftly to market trends in Europe by transforming a development team into a team devoted exclusively to the smartphone platform. In North America as well, we are speeding up the shift to smartphones in order to succeed in 2010. Our plan is to create a seamless link between the North American and European development teams. Furthermore, by working with the sales and marketing team, our development teams will create a system of cooperation for achieving singleness of purpose that can be highly successful in the rapidly changing mobile phone markets in Europe and North America.
